2022 Home Industry Trends

If 2022 has a theme, it’s “We’re over it!” We are in need of a refresh, a reset, a redefining of our priorities — and our styles. When it comes to our homes, more homeowners want to create escape-worthy spaces that are not only uplifting but conducive to our health and wellbeing.

2022 home industry trends reflect a desire for design that captures energy and optimism, elevating our mood, and aesthetic, for the year ahead.

Top 2022 Home Industry Trends

1. The Home Office: Still On Our Mind

Suffering from “Zoom fatigue”? Aren’t we all! But that is not stopping the drive towards enhanced office spaces. In fact, it may be fueling it.  As we become more aware of how a room’s layout and aesthetic impact energy, concentration, and productivity, there is a real push towards “real” office spaces.

Devin Shafer, lead interior designer at Decorilla Online Interior Design, for example, says, “Once unused rooms such as secondary living spaces and breakfast rooms are now being transformed into custom office spaces with built-ins and high-tech solutions such as smart boards, projectors, and wet bars.”

One of the spaces that people are turning to more in 2022 is their closets. The “cloffice”transforms a closet, cupboard, nook, or corner into a fully functional office — and the results can be stunning! For example, Ashley Donielle, fashion, lifestyle, and beauty influencer, worked with Indianapolis’s own Meridian Closets to revamp her walk-in. It now features plenty of built-in shelves, drawers, and organizational systems that allow her to work and show off her collection of couture, shoes, bags, and beauty products.

2. Outdoor Living

Another home industry trend that’s carrying over from 2021 is the focus on luxe outdoor spaces. More homeowners want these “rooms” to feel like extensions of their indoor living areas. A grill on the deck is a perfect fair-weather friend, but today’s outdoor kitchens feature commercial-grade ranges and grills, refrigerators, wet bars, wine coolers, and more. And, as materials become more advanced and can withstand the elements, we will see more elaborate dining and seating areas.

Touches such as discrete speakers and television screens further blur the lines between indoors and out. Add a firepit, fireplace, or efficient heating system, and you have an ideal year-round experience.

We also see a marked move towards inviting Mother Nature indoors. One way to do this is to swap out traditional patio doors for innovative bi-fold and multi-slide versions that create a seamless transition from space to space. As well, biophilic design is becoming a hot trend in its own right: from the integration of indoor water features to herb fridges and living walls, we want to see more green!

This desire extends to other aspects of design. More homeowners are opting for natural, sustainable, and reclaimed materials, as well as earthy tones. Design expert Athene Calderone says, “Neutrals will take a bit of a back seat in 2022 as people start to experiment with color again, but the palette will stay very close to hues you’d find in nature. We predict pain rollers will be dipped in rosy, terracotta tones, swathing rooms from wall to ceiling for a complete monochromatic moment that envelopes you in its coziness.”

3. Embracing the Bold and the Beautiful

Not keen on swathing your rooms in rosy, terracotta coziness? You may rather embrace a competing 2022 home industry trend: bold! Again from Timothy Corrigan: “The years of dull and muted colors have given way to bright, joyful colors that put a smile on your face.”

Design thought leaders expect to see everything from peacock blue and citrus green to burnt orange and tropical-inspired pinks. Also putting a smile on more people’s faces: wallpaper. It has been making its way back since 2020, and this year, we’ll see more bold, patterned, textured options that show off the homeowners’ personality.

“Wallpaper continues to be a dominant element in interiors, with strong patterns and more textured materials being used to create spaces that envelop and cocoon you,” says Corrigan.

The sense of warmth and coziness is there, just as it is with the more earthy palette we discussed. Going bold is just a different way to create that feeling of comfort.

4. Fresh Looks with Up-and-Coming Artists

How many homes or businesses have you set foot in, only to lay eyes on the same prints and pieces? And how many times has it been intimated that art is intimidating? That galleries are for “serious” collectors only? No. Art is accessible, and it does elevate your space and create a mood. It can also reflect your values and beliefs. This is why collections are trending towards local artists and artists of color, for example. We want art that is evocative of the diversity of our world, and its perspectives, as well as pieces that tell a story.

And… It is a breath of fresh air to view interesting, intriguing pieces that aren’t recreated in homes across the country!

5. Seamless Tech Solutions from Start to Finish

Technology is certainly not a new trend for 2022, but it is at the forefront of many minds. Tech is becoming more integrated, and integral, in design. This starts right at the beginning as savvy companies offer virtual consultations and tools (e.g. measuring apps, visualizers, product selection, etc.) in order to minimize exposure and maximize comfort levels — and results. As we start to ease up on restrictions, these innovations will remain in play because they are just so convenient!

Technology is also integrated into the design from the get-go to ensure the homeowner’s experience is seamless. Features include centralized video hubs, discrete speakers, wifi repeaters, specialized outlets (e.g. Ultra-Fast Plus Power Delivery with USB-C), systems integration, one-app control over everything, and more.
