Holiday Home Safety Checklist

During the holidays, homes are the hub of large family gatherings, festivities and cooking. In all our plans and merrymaking, we can forget that our homes may not be set up in the safest of ways. Especially when inviting children and elderly relatives over, there are a number of things you can do to ensure there are no unfortunate accidents:

  • Make certain TV’s are secure and stable on stands or on mounts; small children visiting can be injured when TV’s are accidentally knocked over.
  • Keep ornaments out of reach of babies and toddlers. Even thought they may not be glass that can break, the smaller pieces on these decorations can be choking hazards. For the tree, avoid hanging any on the lowest branches, or put a gate around it.
  • Lock up medicines or hide them away from common drawers, cabinets and countertops. You don’t want the kids getting into them, and your adult visitors won’t mix up their medicines with yours.
  • Fire safety is really important during holidays. Make sure your smoke detectors are working. Candles are great for setting the mood, but place them where they will not be easily knocked over and make sure to extinguish them before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • For elderly visitors who may not be so stable on their feet, remove throw rugs and other decorative floor coverings that could unexpectedly trip them up.
