Design trends for your home consist of more than the hottest new color. The latest in cooking technology, flooring materials, aging-in-place specifications, and even fabrics add up to create an up-to-date home. The members of Home Artisans of Indiana offer their view of the interior design world through their individual expertise:

COLORS & TEXTURES: “Grays are the new beige, serving as a neutral base for many home designs. Layering textured elements like grained woods, leather and stone in the same neutral color family offer architectural interest. Playing with finishes like high gloss or suede add even more interest.” HAOI member Erin Moore, California Closets

DRAPERY AND WINDOW TREATMENTS: “Orange has made a big comeback in recent years. Tangerine Tango was the Pantone Color of 2012, leading the way for orange hues being included in draperies. Also, menswear fabrics like plaid, houndstooth, wool, and tweed are showing up in the latest window covering designs, creating a clean and tailored look.” HAOI member Caryn O’Sullivan, Drapery Street

FLOORING, KITCHENS, AND BATHROOMS: “Wide plank wire brushed hardwood flooring is really taking off. The natural wood is wire brushed by hand to expose deep textures and unique grain patterns. Also, in kitchens and bathrooms, lots of grays and cool tones are being used on cabinetry, tile, countertops and wall paint.” HAOI member David Decker, The Affordable Companies

LIGHTING: “Throughout 2014 we have seen an increased popularity in mid century modern and urban renewal designs. Chrome, Wood and Brass finishes are in, as some homeowners are tired of using brushed nickel and bronze.” HAOI member Tracy Leeper King, Indiana Lighting Center

AGING-IN-PLACE DESIGN: “Some of the hottest design trends — large, walk-in showers without doors, boutique tiles, and versatile shower sprays — fit right in with designs that make showers safe, accessible and enjoyable to use for everyone. Grab bars now come in a variety of colors, chic shapes and elegant finishes, often coordinating with other bathroom accessories.” HAOI member Kent McCool, Home Safe Homes

MASTER BATHROOMS: “We are seeing more spa-like showers and less whirlpool and soaker tubs in master bathrooms. These showers are larger and have rain cans in the ceiling, handheld sprayers on slide bars, built-in body sprays, and more than one standard shower head.  Showering has become more of a spa experience than in the past.” HAOI member Cathy Stegemoller, Steg Plumbing

TV ROOM: “More people are utilizing the space above the fireplace for their TVs and other entertainment needs. In many cases this space provides a natural and easy wall cavity for hiding cords and wires. It’s also a great place to accommodate larger screens that seem to outgrow typical entertainment centers. Not a big fan of TVs above fireplaces? You can get special 2-way mirror glass panes that are see-through when the TV is on but opaque when it’s off, effortlessly hiding your system.” HAOI member Doug Marvel, Marvelous Woodworking

KITCHEN APPLIANCES: “Consumers are looking to furnish their kitchens with appliances they see professional chefs using on cooking shows and in restaurants. GE came out with a new wall oven this past June, boasting French doors and an impressive convection system. The oven’s double doors open in the middle instead of the top, increasing the ease of getting things in and out of the oven, as well as reducing the amount of space the oven requires in front of it. The French door wall oven typifies the trend of advanced cooking technology becoming readily available in the home.” HAOI member Trey Oetjen, HH Gregg Fine Lines
