Installing a T.V above a fireplace mantel seems like the perfect space-saving solution, as you eliminate the need for a T.V. cabinet or stand. But installing your big screen above the fireplace takes a little more thought than just sticking it up there. Nobody wants the ugly tangle of cords and wiring hanging out all over the mantel. Fortunately Home Artisans of Indiana member Doug Marvel of Marvelous Woodworking, has created an ingenious solution: the custom fireplace mantel.
Though it’s fairly easy to thread wires behind a wall, many fireplaces are made of brick up to the chimney and can’t be knocked through.
Doug Marvel has worked around this problem by designing a hollow, wooden mantel, custom-made to fit the style of the particular home. Doug strategically drills holes in the mantel to run cables and wires through, and the removable panels make it easy to access your wiring. A couple tall cabinets placed next to the mantel can store all your other electronics and components that plug into your T.V, completing your entertainment system.
