Home Artisans of Indiana member, The Affordable Companies, are experts on updating home interiors. David Decker took us through their process for this kitchen remodel, transforming the space from outdated to inviting and comfortable:
“The kitchen had heavy, dark cabinetry that made the room look narrow and feel cramped, a dated design style we often come across in older homes. We successfully transformed it into a bright, open design with even more storage space.
One of the first things on our agenda was to lighten up the room. We opted for bright white cabinets, which makes the space feel larger. We also installed hardwood oak floors and a tile backsplash. The light color of the oak helps brighten the kitchen, but there’s still enough color to provide contrast with the white cabinets. The backsplash is a lovely mix of linear glass and stone, adding texture and interest. We also played with contrast between the cabinetry and island. The island features darker cabinets and a lighter quartz countertop. The perimeter cabinets have a slightly darker countertop. These details add dimension and depth to the room, taking it from a basic kitchen to one that is full of style.
In the end, we added more cabinet space by framing in the pass-through window and installing additional storage. The hardwood floors, backsplash, updated appliances, new fixtures and wine refrigerator brought this kitchen into the 21st century. Now our clients have a bright and open place for eating, entertaining, and spending time together.”
