Roof Warning Signs — Has Your Roof Seen Its Final Days?

It isn’t always easy to know what condition your roof is in. To inspect it properly, you have to climb on top of your house and look at everything up close. Shingles themselves have different life spans, from 25 to 50 years, but a bad storm can cause major damage to them. At the end of the day, it takes a specialist to really know when a roof needs to be replaced. But as a homeowner, there are roof warning signs you can look out for, and know when it’s time to call in that qualified roofer:

  • Missing shingles or tabs: Wind, rodents and fallen heavy branches can take a beating to your shingles, and if you see any missing, you will want to call in an expert to assess the extent of the damage.
  • Recent Severe Storms: Even a brand new roof can sustain heavy damage or be ruined by harsh weather. A roof inspection is recommended after any severe storms including high wind, hail, and flying debris.
  • Granules in the Gutter: Finding a lot of small, round granules in your gutters is an indication that your shingles have been degraded and need replacing.
  • Baking Attic: If your attic is becoming super-heated in the summer, that can mean the granules from the shingles have washed off almost completely, leaving your roof with no protection against heat.
